Classical roots of top 10 Hindi movie songs of the 1960s

Here’s my pick of top ten Hindi film songs from the 1960s and the classical ragas behind these songs.

1.Chaudhvin Ka Chand – The gentle melody sung by Mohammed Rafi in the 1960 hit movie Chaudhvin Ka Chand is based on raag Pahadi.

Here’s a classic rendition of raag Pahadi by legendary flautist Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia.

2.Madhuban Mein Radhika Nache Re – The song by Mohammed Rafi in the 1960 hit movie Kohinoor is based on raag Hamir Kalyan.

Here’s a beautiful song in raag Hameer by Pandit D.V.Paluskar.

3.Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya – The song sung by Lata Mangeshkar in the 1960 hit movie Mughal -e- Azam begins with raag Darbari (where only the taan is heard) and then moves onto the song which is based on raag Durga.

Here is a khayal sung by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi in raag Durga.

4. Aap Yun Hi Agar – This duet sung by Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhonsale in the 1962 movie Ek Musafir Ek Hasina is based on raag Kedar.

Here’s a classic rendition of raag Kedar by Rajan and Sajan Mishra.

5.Bol Radha Bol Sangam – This song by Mukesh in the 1964 movie Sangam is based on raag Bhairavi.

Here is a classic rendition of the raag by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.

6. Sayonara Sayonara – This song by Lata Mangeshkar in the 1966 movie Love in Tokyo is based on raag Bhoop.

Here is a rendition of raag Bhoop by Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur

7.Aji Rootkar Kar Ab Kahan Jaiyega – The song by Lata Mangeshkar in 1965 hit movie Arzoo is based on raag Desh.

Here is a beautiful rendition of raag Desh by Ustad Vilayat Khan on the sitar.

8. Abhi Na Jao Chodkar – The song by Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhonsale in the 1961 movie Hum Dono is based on raag Yaman Kalyan.

Here is a classic rendition of raag Yaman Kalyan by Pandit Ravi Shankar

9.Aap Ki Nazro Ne Samjha – This song sung by Lata Mangeshkar in the 1962 movie Anpadh is based on raag Darbari Kannada.

Here is a khayal in this raag by Pandit Jasraj.

10.Ae Mere Joharjabi – This song by Manna Dey in the movie 1965 Waqt is based on raag Pilu.

Here is a classic rendition of raag Pilu on the sarod by Ustad Amjad Ali Khan.
