Carnatic composer Tyagaraja’s songs mostly centred around Rama yet there are a few that focus on other deities such as “Giriraja Sutha” on Ganesha, “Varashikhi Vaahana” on Muruga, “Vinayakuni Valenu Brova” on Kamakshi, “Vaidehi Tava Padabhakthim” on Shri (Lakshmi).
In Elara Krishna” the composer cries out (in anguish) as to why Krishna is upset with him? Tyagaraja’s songs were written as one would talk with a beloved family member in an easy conversational style. Here is a recording of the song from one of my concerts in Bangalore. It was part of the annual Krishnotsava festival conducted by Percussion Arts Centre at Jayarama Seva Mandali. My guru, the late Seethalakshmi Venkatesan was honoured at this festival.
