This article in the Indian Express about the American author, professor, feminist, and social activist Gloria Jean Watkins, better known by her pen name Bell Hooks, was a timely reminder while ushering a new year that we teachers have a responsibility to bring the real world into our classroom. It might be the only space where students can wrestle with these complex issues integral to creating a more just and equal society. It creates a more enabling environment for students from all backgrounds to be seen, heard and empowered.
